Please show your Schleich, Copperfox, WIA, Breyer CollectA line, Hartland, Papo, Blue Ribbon, Royal Breeds, Safari, Mojo, Marx, Julip, and others here. These may have soft hair. They can be any size. These will start after OF STONE CLASSES.

OF ALL MAKES EQUINE DECORATOR/FANTASY will not receive NAN cards. These will start after OF BREYER BREED CLASSES.

CM EQUINE DECORATOR/FANTASY will be eligible for NAN qualification in the workmanship division. CM/AR Fantasy Equine entries will be judged based on the artistry of the sculpture, lack of prepping and painting flaws, overall presentation, and believability of the creature's biomechanics. These classes will start after the CM division.

Fantasy Equine eligibility is limited to equine-based fantasy models such as Equine Unicorns, Pegasus, Hippocampus, Hippogriff, Thestral, Zombie Horse, Skeletal Horse, or other fantasy equines which depict a creature that is at least 50% equine in form. Determination of the 50% compliance for equine creatures is decided by the judge. Approval of the 50% compliant equine models at the local show level does not guarantee eligibility at NAN. Creatures that have partial human anatomy or anatomy similar to humans are not allowed even if they are more than 50% equine.

A person may not show and judge in the same division at a NAN-Qualifying Show. A division is defined as one or more grouped classes such as “OF Breyer Plastic”.

A judge may not judge any model that he/she has worked/collaborated on. A judge may not judge any model which he/she owns or has owned within the last six months. A judge may not judge models owned by relatives of the judge. A judge may not judge any models owned by any individual who co-owns one or more models with that judge. This means that on rare occasions a shower may be asked not to show a specific model. Last-minute changes to the judges' roster cannot be made to accommodate a model.

NAN entry qualifications earned at NAMHSA member shows are provided to entrants in the form of NAN cards. These cards are now the only proof of a model’s NAN qualification. Show entrants will be responsible for filling out the class/horse information on the card.

FAQ:

IS THIS SHOW NAMSHA APPROVED? Yes. NAN cards will be awarded to first and second place in breed classes, select lunch classes, and the CM Equine Decorator/Fantasy division.

WHY PLASTIC? I'm hoping that show with a focus on original finish and custom horses will bring together collectors and artists who love Breyer, Stone, and Schleich models. With three rings (six divisions) running concurrently showers will be able to focus on their show string with fewer distractions!

WHY SECOND PLACE HORSES FOR CALL BACKS? If, for example, the judge had two lovely Appaloosas in one class and they were the best representation of real horses in the entire Stock Horse division the second place Appy could place as the Reserve Champion over the first place Quarter Horse.

WHAT SIZE IS MY HORSE?
Traditional: These are Breyer/Stone's large models at 1:9 Scale. Adult horses are about 12 inches long by 9 inches high.
Classic/Freedom Series: Breyer's mid-size models at 1:12 Scale. Adult horses are about 9 inches long by 7 inches high.
Curio: Breyer Paddock Pals/Little Bits and Collectas, Stone Pebbles, and Schleich Models are in the 1:18 to 1:24 scale range and about 5 inches long by 4 inches high.
Stablemate/Chips: Originally 1:32 Scale, these have been inching up over time. Adult horses are about 4 inches long by 3 inches high.
Micro/Mini Whinny: 1:64 Scale. Adult horses are about 2 inches long by 1.5 inches high.

WHY ARE CM CURIOS NOT IN WITH CM MINIS? Curio scale has an advantage over Stablemates and Micros when it comes to customs because that size is more conducive to details like hair-by-hair dapples and pinto markings.

WHY ARE THE CLASS LISTS DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT DIVISIONS? I hope that the class lists will reflect the molds available to be shown in that division. I imagine that there are more opportunities for a CM Donkey than for an OF Peter Stone one. I did my best to not waste the judges' time by calling classes without entries. The classes also reflect that more showers collect Breyers than other plastic makes. I hope this will let the show run smoothly.

I SELL MODELS THAT I PAINT FOR $35. CAN I SHOW IN WORKMANSHIP/FINISH WORK BY OWNER AMATEUR BECAUSE I DON'T CHARGE WHAT BIG-NAME ARTISTS DO? No.

WHY NO NAN CARDS FOR OF ALL MAKES EQUINE DECORATOR/FANTASY?  Yellow NAN cards for OF models is based on collectibility of the model. This division will not be judged on age/rarity/collectibility. It will be judged on beauty, color, and uniqueness of the models. Please bring your current runs as well as your OOAKs. Do enter your vintage models in the OF Vintage (pre-1980) lunch class.

CAN I SUPPORT THE SHOW? Yes. Donations to the raffle will help pay for the 1,280 paper flats, the 112 double-layer champion and reserve ribbons, and the 18 rosettes. Please contact Sarah at sarahtregay@yahoo.com before the show regarding a donation or bring something on the day show.

CAN I GET A BIGGER TABLE? You may be put on a waitlist for a larger table. If one becomes available, you will be notified.

CAN I SELL MODELS FROM MY TABLE? Yes.

WILL THERE BE RIBBON RECYCLING? Yes, you may give your ribbons back at the end of the day if you wish.

New Pan Pastels - An Update

A little while back I posted a photo of my new Pan Pastel colors. I've gotten a chance to use them, and have found them quite handy.      First, these colors are all useful—which is not something I say about many of the Pan Pastel colors because they are not all well suited for horses. The orange shade looks a little odd at first, but once it's part of the coat it softens to a nice, bright addition to chestnuts, palominos, buckskins and bays. I think of is as more of a golden tone than orange when the model is finished.      Second, they are easy to use—no sandpaper palette needed, no huge-jar-o-dust waiting to spill. The pans work with both paintbrushes and Microbrush applicators for small details like leg bars and dorsal stripes.     Third, the colors work well together and blend well. For example, on this model I used the Burnt Sienna Extra Dark to deepen a few areas I had dusted with the Burnt Sienna Shade. So... thes...

A Golden bay in Pan Pastels

I thought I'd share a bit of my process. I'm working in Pan Pastels. The model in question is a simple custom Morgan Stallion from the new standing Stablemate Warmblood mold. He has had some work done on his barrel and hindquarters. His mane and tail have been changed as well.  I prepped him with Rustoleum 2X primer in white and taped off some white markings with blue painters tape. Feel free to follow along and paint your own golden bay or liver chestnut.  A Pan Pastel Project Art Supplies Shopping list: A model with sanded seams and logo removed 400 Grit Sandpaper Masking or painters tape (optional) Rustolem 2X Primer Pan Pastels: 280.3 Orange Shade, 820.2 Neutral Grey Extra Dark (or other neutral grey), Layer 3: 740.3 Burnt Sienna Shade, 740.1 Burnt Sienna Extra Dark, 800.5 Black. Performance Bases with Kinetic Sand

I am getting ready for the Save The Tigers Model Horse Show on Saturday, and I thought I'd spiff up my performance entries a little with arena bases. My goals here were to keep to a small budget and a manageable size. For the first one, I found a wall hanging at Walmart—a picture frame without glass or a matte for about $5.00. I removed the hook from the back so it would lie flat on the table and a clip from the front. I also found a 3 lb. bag of kinetic sand for $13.00. (Regular sand can be done, but I usually make a mess of it.) Honestly, I'm a little worried about sand scratching my models, but it does look neat. The fence is made of hobby wood (the small Popsicle sticks) and is removable for easy, flat storage. It stands 1 3/4 inches above the edge of the arena. Just a note, I steer clear of balsa wood because it is so fragile. Picture frame base about 6 x 8.5 inches. 3 lbs of kinetic sand isn't a lot. Quick! Unlike regular sand, kinetic sand h...
